About Agate Beach
Located near Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Agate Beach is renowned for its abundance of agates and other semi-precious stones that wash ashore, making it a popular spot for rock collectors who comb the sandy and rocky intertidal zone. The beach's dramatic sea stacks, tide pools teeming with starfish and anemones, and relatively sheltered waters create a scenic and explorable environment ideal for families and casual beachgoers. The consistent wave action and cool Pacific waters make it less suitable for swimming but excellent for beachcombing, photography, and observing marine life.

There is s hidden trail down to the beach (double black diamond) only for the foolish like me to access the beach for rockhounding. Remember to watch the tide so you dont get stuck out on the rocks or trapped at the cliffs.
Be aware that the access to this beach is every bit as dangerous as others have claimed, even in dry conditions. The descent is longer and steeper than photos can portray. And for whatever reason, in early October 2025, we experienced agate hunters found NOT ONE SINGLE AGATE. The shallow beach and tides will limit how long you can stay, and you won't want to be carrying much gear.
There is a path on the north side of the Otter Point Parking location on the map for public access to this beach. Depending on the tide you have to be careful and not get stuck. The end of the trail is steep and slick but it does have a rope.
One of the most amazing places I've ever been. The way down is hard. Especially in the rain lol. If you are physically able go here. Expect a rope half rappel down, very rocky and steep. I have never seen so many agates in one place.
From the satellite view it looks great but google fails to mention that it is a private beach with no public access.
