About Big Shell Beach
Big Shell Beach is a narrow, shell-covered stretch of sand on North Padre Island known for its dramatic accumulation of seashells, which create a distinctive crunching surface underfoot and attract serious shell collectors year-round. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for wading and beginner swimmers, while the relatively quiet atmosphere and lack of heavy development appeal to visitors seeking a more low-key beach experience away from the busier tourist areas. The abundance of shells also draws shorebirds and provides good opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

Great hidden treasure in the coastal South of Texas, hidden behind a state park. This untraveled beach allows you drive in your 4x4 only a few feet from the ocean. The wildlife here is breathtaking, and totally worth the drive. You have to drive around 40-50 miles to get to big shell, and you can only go 10-15 miles an hour, so factor that into the drive. You definitely need a four-wheel drive! There is no cell service and no fueling options, so be prepared - but it's worth it!
We initially didn't realize that you need to drive 20 miles down the beach to get there. Glad we went at low tide and had 4wd! They say you should go during the winter time to have the best chance of finding great shells.
Look at the tidal charts and time your driving for low tide so you can drive on compacted smooth beach. We went as a group with Ford F-350, Subaru Outback, Toyota Tacoma, and jeep gladiator. Nobody got stuck. Ideally, if you go during low tide, you could make it all the way down without 4wd. We found the biggest shells closer to mile markers 50-55.
I heard about this beach just moved to Corpus Christi every time I put Big Shell Beach in my GPS it says it's 12 hrs + away and only offers walking to the beach is something wrong with my GPS???
If you have a high clearance vehicle, enjoy long drives on the beach (17-28 miles), and solitude, this is the beach for you. Be sure to bring everything you need, the blue trash can (and your vehicle) is the only reminder that humanity and civilization.
