About Black Rock Beach

Black Rock Beach, anchored by the iconic Pu'u Keka'a lava formation that juts dramatically into the ocean, offers some of West Maui's clearest water and most reliable snorkeling, with abundant reef fish and sea turtles visible just offshore. The beach's unique black sand and rock terrain creates a striking contrast to the turquoise water, while its proximity to Lahaina's town center keeps it accessible yet less crowded than nearby Ka'anapali Beach. The rock itself is popular for cliff jumping and diving among experienced swimmers, and the entire area has a lively but laid-back energy, especially during golden hour.

There is a nice walking path from the main hotels. Lovely walk. Then arriving to this place is rewarding. This is a public beach with plenty of area to sit. Not shades at the area unless you sit very close to the rock. Snorkeling here is easy and you just need the basic equipment. You can see Turtles and a great variety of fish. Just respect their areas. Don't touch them. Don't stand on the rocks in the water. It is their home. Totally recommended. The sunset is spectacular!

Guaranteed spot to see turtles while snorkeling in the mornings from 7 AM to 10AM. Some other decent fish life to see as well. Enter the water in sandy areas and swim towards the rocks across than entering in the rocky areas. At sunset there is a cliff diving ceremony as well everyday. Occasionally you may see monk seals basking in the beach if lucky. Remember to keep your 10 feet distance from the turtles.

What a gorgeous place! Snorkeling was calm and amazing here. And the shaved ice place around the corner is the best. Parking sucks though. πŸ˜… I ended up parking at Whalers Village, which is very expensive. If you want to get any of the free, public parking, go early. Or stay at the Sheraton.

Black Rock is one of Maui’s most iconic beaches, and it’s easy to see why. The beach itself is beautiful, with clear waters, soft sand, and plenty of roomβ€”even when it’s crowded. It’s an excellent spot for snorkeling, offering the chance to see colorful fish and other marine life up close. Parking can be tricky and expensive, which can be frustrating if you’re not prepared. Here’s a little insider tip: if you pay for parking, head to one of the Sheraton bars and ask for the QR code that gives you a $16 rebate. You may need to order a drink to get it, but it’s a small price to save on parking and worth the effort. Of course, the star attraction is the Black Rock itself. Climb up, take in the stunning views, and if you’re feeling brave, jump into the ocean below. It’s a very popular activity, so expect a crowd, but the thrill and the scenery make it well worth it. Between snorkeling, beach relaxation, and the jump, Black Rock is a full-day experience you won’t want to miss.

Swimming with the turtles was incredible. Was so shocked and surprised. Loved seeing the adolescents jumping off the cliff. A very memorable beach with loads of fun and snorkeling. Follow my travels @alexirofsoul
