About Black's Beach
Tucked beneath the Torrey Pines cliffs, Black's Beach offers powerful waves and strong currents that attract experienced surfers and bodyboarders seeking challenging conditions, while the dramatic 300-foot sandstone bluffs create a striking natural amphitheater. The beach is known as one of Southern California's few clothing-optional areas, drawing a laid-back, open-minded crowd distinct from typical San Diego beaches. Access requires either a steep 300-step descent from the cliffs or a walk from nearby Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which keeps it less crowded than neighboring beaches and preserves its secluded, bohemian atmosphere.

Definitely go here! The parking is free and there's lots of it. You might have to walk far though. There are things to do at the top of the cliffs but you have about a 10-20 minute hike down the cliff to access the beach. Note, the only way back up is to climb the steps back up... It's mostly steps but parts of the hike are a little scary. I would only recommend doing this if you are a good walker and have a bit of stamina. I'm 6 months pregnant and had to stop multiple times on the way back up. Now... The beach... It is beautiful and a mix of regular people and nudist.... Mostly naked men but a lot of women do have their tops off. The beach was clean and the water was great! I highly recommend going and cannot wait to go back! Definitely bring a blanket and your bathing suit!!
The beach is wide and the water looks great! Not really friendly, but people are respectful. There is a long area of shallow water following wave break, but it can be difficult to make your way into deeper waters. I was knocked back a few times, even when going βunderβ the wave. The fact that paragliders also use the area makes it somewhat challenging for parking. Also, the stairs! It is LITERALLY a hike, so youβll definitely get a workout. Factor that obstacle into your beach time.
Absolutely gorgeous spot. Hike down to the beach not for the faint of heart.
Gorgeous scenery and a short, but challenging hike up and down the cliffside. The views and beach are worth the effort! Great place to sunbathe and watch the gliders pass overhead.
Nice spot with good views. Went out for quiet time and fresh air and it was pretty peaceful. The cliffs overlook the beach bellow which you can access from trail and steps. There is also a restaurant and hang-gliding option if thatβs your thing. Party is a little limited. I went on the weekend and during the week, the weekday is less crowded.
