About Cape Lookout

Cape Lookout offers dramatic views of the distinctive diamond-patterned lighthouse and a dynamic shoreline where the Atlantic meets Bogue Sound, creating varied conditions ideal for both calm-water kayaking and powerful ocean swells. The remote barrier island setting attracts serious surfers, shell collectors, and anglers seeking uncrowded beaches backed by maritime forest and wild horses. The rugged, windswept character and lack of commercial development give it a pristine, adventurous feel compared to typical North Carolina beach towns.

We always have a great time here, best place to find shells and its never crowded! Usually we rent the atvs and our family always enjoys that, totally worth the extra expense!

I love this place so much I wish I could go every day. It’s beautiful and fun and always an adventure. Quality family time or a peaceful escape, you decide. There is a person ferry and a car ferry available on the main land. They have a small station for gas and to air your tires back up, climb the lighthouse, camp or stay in a cabin. So much to do!

This is a pretty interesting place to visit. The beach is spectacular and the National Park Service does a great job making the place accessible. It is only accessible by boat and the easiest way to get there is Island Express Ferry from the Park Service Visitor Center on Harkers Island. That Ferry service will also take you to Shackleford Banks.

The ferry ride was amazing. It was on time and had a smooth ride. They picked us up on time that was designated for us as well. Overall, the experience seeing my first National Seashore was great along with finding a massive shell!!

This place was dope! Driving up and down the beach in our truck camper was so neat. There was hardly anyone on the island, so we basically had the beach to ourselves. It was fairly windy & a little chilly. My brother did catch a Pompano fish for us to have as an appetizer before dinner. We also had a fire on the beach. Cool experience waking up and hearing the ocean and knowing your camping right on it. Awesome sunsets too!
