About Echo Lake Beach
Echo Lake Beach offers the rare advantage of freshwater swimming in a stunning mountain setting, with the lake's calm, clear waters warmed by summer sun and framed by the rocky peaks of Mount Desert Island. The protected cove attracts families and casual swimmers looking for a gentler alternative to the Atlantic, along with kayakers who appreciate the gentle conditions. The small sandy beach sits just off Route 198 with modest facilities and a quiet, low-key atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier coastal attractions nearby.
Visitor Reviews
Visiting this beach in late June 2025 offered a serene and practical start to our hiking adventure. Arriving around 9:00 AM on a Sunday proved to be the perfect timing, as the parking lot was nearly empty, offering plenty of spots close to the shore. While the water temperature was strikingly coldβfar too chilly for a swimβthe beach served as an excellent staging area for our primary goal: the Beech Cliff Trail. βThe accessibility of the area is well-thought-out. From the parking lot, several sets of stairs lead directly down to the sand, and for those with strollers or mobility needs, there appears to be a ramp access further back. The facilities are surprisingly robust for a natural trail area; we were impressed by the availability of clean bathrooms with running water, a drinking fountain, and numerous changing rooms. The transition from the paved asphalt sidewalk to a sturdy wooden boardwalk makes the trek across the sand much easier, stretching quite far toward the shoreline. βThe highlight of the morning was the unexpected wildlife encounter. With the beach almost entirely to ourselves, we were privileged to witness a turtle laying its eggs in the sand. Being mindful of how easily these creatures can be spooked into abandoning their nests, we made sure to maintain a respectful distance to let nature take its course. βThe beach itself has a rugged, natural charm. The sand is coarse and mixed with organic debris like twigs, leaves, and smooth rocks, giving it an untouched feel. While the lack of shade might be a challenge on a scorching afternoon, the presence of a picnic table and the overall cleanliness of the grounds make it a lovely spot for a quiet break. It served as the perfect, low-stress "warm-up" environment before we tackled the more strenuous Beehive Trail the following day.
We visited on a Sunday morning in late June 2025. There was ton of parking spots when we arrived around 9AM. We didn't really have any intention of playing on this beach or going into the water (it was VERY cold by the way) but we were here to do the Beech Cliff Trail with the ladders. This was a warm up test for us to do Beehive Trail the next day. We went down to the beach as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. There were a number of stairs that take you down to the beach area. I think there is a ramp too if you park further back but we parked pretty close to the beach itself. There are trash cans and recycling here. There is also a bathroom with running water and water fountain as well as a ton of changing rooms. The paved asphalt sidewalk ends and turned into a wooden boardwalk that goes pretty car out into the sand and close to the water. The beach was completely empty except for us and the coolest thing was we saw a turtle laying it's eggs. I know turtles get nervous with people and sometimes this causes them to dig fake nests and try again another time. We tried to keep our distance. Overall a very clean beach with coarse sand and a lot of natural debris like rocks and twigs and leaves. If it was warmer I'd have no problem hanging out here. There really isn't any shade on the beach itself but there was at least 1 picnic table.
Beautiful place to hang out! Went in the fall and the foliage was stunning! The beach was a short walk from the parking lot, making it easy to access. Lots of parking and easy to get to. Highly recommend visiting.
Lovely views of the lake. Didn't seem overcrowded during mid-week in late August in the early afternoon. Adequate parking lot.
Quiet beach in lovely setting. Water is fairly shallow for a good ways out. Nice to walk around in.
