About Katama Beach/ South Beach
Katama Beach is a three-mile stretch of pristine barrier beach known for its powerful Atlantic swells, making it a premier destination for surfing and bodyboarding along Martha's Vineyard's south shore. The beach features wide sandy flats, strong currents, and cold water temperatures that attract experienced swimmers and water sports enthusiasts rather than casual beachgoers, creating a more rugged and athletic atmosphere than the island's calmer northern beaches. Beyond the water, the relatively undeveloped landscape and access to the nearby Katama Bay salt marshes offer quieter moments for observing wildlife and enjoying the raw New England coastal scenery.

Took the Katama Beach Bike Route to Norton Point Landing. Beautiful ride. We did early in the morning (6:30am) on a Tuesday. No traffic. Well-maintained bike path. Took us about 1 hour loop from the Harbor View Hotel to Katama Beach. We did stop often to take photos. Path is used by bicyclists, walkers, joggers, and rollerbladers. There is a significant amount of people on it later in the morning.
Awesome beach. Wide soft sand with a great place to look for shells and rocks. On certain days there can be stronger rip currents. Many days it is not. I would check reports before going out if you are not a strong swimmer.
Great beach. Nice soft sand. Parking is easy enough if youβre patient. One thing to note - hide tide. You would be one or two people wide due to how high the tide comes up but also due to the drop off to the water. Fantastic spot for an afternoon.
This was one of the best beaches my wife and I ever visited. We had no windy weather in September, water temperature was good, people were very friendly and the beach was clean. However, the best part was the calmness of the beach.
Long stretch of beach with 4wd access. Water is calm and people are spread out nicely. They also have facilities to let you deflate and inflate tires.
