About Kaulahao Beach
Kaulahao Beach is a secluded north shore gem known for its powerful shore break and consistent waves that attract experienced bodyboarders and surfers seeking challenging conditions. The beach features dark volcanic sand, lush ironwood trees providing natural shade, and dramatic views of the West Maui mountains, creating a raw and rugged atmosphere that feels removed from Paia's busier tourist areas. The strong currents and rocky entry make it best suited for water sports enthusiasts rather than casual swimmers, and the relatively quiet crowd gives it an authentic local vibe despite its proximity to town.

Kaulahao Beach was recommended to us by a few locals in the Paia shops, and they were right β we got to see several sea turtles on the beach! π’ Itβs a nice, more local spot with people fishing and a laid-back atmosphere, not overly crowded with tourists. The only frustrating part was watching some visitors ignore the posted signs asking people to keep their distance from the turtles. Itβs a privilege to see them up close, and I wish everyone respected that. Still, this beach was a highlight of our trip and definitely worth a stop if youβre in the area.
We saw so many turtles hereβ¦. It was amazing. Would not recommand swimming because of the hooks of the fisher in the water. Just drive by and say Hi to these beautiful turtles
Great little beach, turtles there any hour of the day. You can see them swimming to shore, and basking in the sun. While we were there, around 1 PM, there were about 10 turtles on the beach. Great waves, and an amazing place to spend a few hours of your day. Located close to Paia, a great location to visit, and then grab a bite, or a drink after. Definitely a must on your trip to Maui.
Great beach to see large sea turtles basking in the sun! There were only 3 on the beach when we were there, but not were coming in. Beautiful, quiet beach.
Nice little beach where you can get a good sighting of turtles. Like everyone else saying, please respect the distance requirement to not disturb the nature but I actually recommend coming later in the day if you want to see more turtles as we found that returning near the evening gave us more sightings and we got to see them come ashore too.
