About Malibu Lagoon State Beach
Malibu Lagoon State Beach features a rare coastal lagoon system that creates calm, shallow waters ideal for swimming and paddleboarding, contrasting sharply with the often-rough Pacific swells nearby. The beach sits beneath dramatic sandstone cliffs and serves as a critical habitat for endangered steelhead trout and native plants, giving it a more ecological focus than typical party beaches in the area. Its protected lagoon waters and proximity to the Malibu Pier make it popular with families and wildlife photographers rather than surfers, offering a quieter alternative to the more crowded Malibu breaks.
Visitor Reviews
We had an awesome day in Malibu Lagoon. I will definitely be visiting it more times. I recently moved to Los Angeles and this is definitely one of my favorite beaches from now on.
Great wildlife and surfing. Views of the Malibu Pier
The ranger had binoculars and pointed out the different birds. Short walk from the parking lot
Great place to spend the day.... with a Whole Foods just a little walk away
The parking lot is small and you need to walk a little to get to the beach but itβs a nice place.
