About Mitchell's Cove Beach
Mitchell's Cove is a sheltered pocket beach in Santa Cruz known for its remarkably calm, clear waters that make it ideal for beginner surfers and swimmers, backed by dramatic sandstone cliffs and a working fishing village atmosphere. The cove's protected position creates consistent small waves and excellent visibility for tidepooling, while its intimate size and local character attract a laid-back crowd seeking an alternative to Santa Cruz's busier beaches. The nearby Steamer Lane break and quick access to coastal trails make it a natural hub for surfers and coastal explorers who appreciate rugged, undeveloped California coastline.

My sons name is Mitchell, so we had to go see it! Anywhere by the beach, and I'm happy! Construction on West Cliff drive right now (05/2025), but you can walk all along above the cove, and get down to it by the cliff rocks.
Beautiful spot for a mid-afternoon late evening stroll. Fairly active with like-minded lockers joggers and families with pets. Gorgeous Cliffs overlooking the ocean views sounds of the Waves crashing into the cliffs offer a peaceful walk. Plenty of benches to sit and relax and enjoy the scenery of sailors and Surfers nearby.
Yet another surprisingly lovely secretive pocket beach, on a coast chock-full of βem, this one has a stairwell access in good condition, & very accessible tide pools & boulders covered in sea life ready for exploration. Also plenty of sand for picnics & sunbathing, yet not crowded, even on a fine sunny Sunday! Currently, the street above is closed to traffic & thereβs lots of repair construction. Closest parking along residential streets only. We watched a few surfers catching a short break away from the Steamer Lane crowds, too.
The entire shoreline north of Santa Cruz, California, is beautiful and serene. I can revisit this shoreline time and time again. There are many beaches along this coast besides Mitchellβs Cove Beach. So check out some of the other areas. This is usually a very quiet beach where are you can enjoy A romantic dinner on the beach or watching the sunset. Even on warmer days there is a slight breeze that always keeps a nice temperature. Very easy to get to by driving north from Santa Cruz on Highway one. The parking is a little difficult because itβs along the road.
This is a small, but dog-friendly beach with lots of interesting tide pools to check out. There are even a couple of little caves that are still large enough to hang out in to get away from the wind. There was plenty of free parking, even on a weekend.
