About Pebbles Beach
Pebbles Beach offers a unique rocky shoreline along Oahu's windward coast, where smooth volcanic stones replace traditional sandy beaches and create a distinctive landscape for exploration and photography. The area is known for its dramatic coastal views, calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling when conditions permit, and abundant opportunities to spot sea turtles and tropical fish in the nearshore waters. Visitors appreciate this less-crowded alternative to Oahu's busier beaches, where the rugged beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a favorite spot for nature lovers and those seeking a more authentic Hawaiian coastal experience.

This is not a Sandy beach- wear water shoes. It IS a beautiful place thatβs very unique, and a great spot to SCUBA. The Pebbles range in size from less than an inch to 10β or more. If you look closely you can see yellow volcanic glass in them. The water gets deep fairly quickly, so maybe not great for snorkeling, but easy entry for swimming when the waves are not too high. In our case this meant in the morning before the wind picks up.
Unique black rock beach on the coast south of Captain Cook. The beach and parking are private but open to the public - I assume the nearby home owners fund it and will only continue to do so if visitors treat the space properly. The beach isn't sandy but rather covered with rocks or pebbles that give way to a little back sand underwater before the reef starts, We visited for scuba diving - and it was an EXCELLENT dive spot. Entry and exit was very easy from the south parking lot - we suited up at the car, then walked down a short lava rock pathway to the beach, and then headed straight into the water. This is a site to visit early in the morning before the wind and surf pick up - by the time we exited our 2nd dive here it was harder getting out of the water due the waves. We went north - lots of underwater features to explore there. Plenty of marine life and the visibility was pretty good for Big Island especially farther from shore. Jack's Diving has very good, detailed maps of this dive site (plus several others) if you want more info. We brought our beach chairs and had lunch on the beach after the dive - very relaxing with the wave action, light breeze, and a few clouds giving a spot of shade now and again. There is no natural shade here though so bring your hats and/or sun shirts.
It was a pleasure to visit this beach. The drive down to the beach is a windy steep road. There is signage that the beach is a private beach, to be respectful. There were few people at the beach. As others wrote, the beach is made up of black rocks of all sizes. Late in the afternoon, these rocks were rather on hot temperature and ware some of type of feet were even in the water. The nice cove has some wave action but good for enjoyment of ocean. Beach is in a residential area, so there is no restroom and no shade. Still, it is a unique beach to enjoy. Remember, there is a drive up that hill.
This is a beautiful and secluded beach. You can wade in a bit, but it drops off quickly and itβs truly pebbles - no sand. The road down is very steep - just make sure you know how to use a low gear and donβt ride your brakes the whole time. Itβs a bit frightening but I donβt think a 4x4 is necessary. Be respectful and donβt leave trash!
This place has a beauty of it own. I wouldn't call it a snorkeling destination. But beautiful in its own right. They don't lie when they call it pebble Beach, though. Definitely a check off the list. But beware of the steep hills. They are paved, but very slick when wet.
