About Pomponio State Beach
Pomponio State Beach near Half Moon Bay offers dramatic coastal scenery with steep sandstone cliffs and tide pools, attracting beachcombers and photographers despite the cold, rough waters that make swimming challenging. The relatively secluded, clothing-optional stretch draws a mix of locals and visitors seeking a quieter alternative to more crowded Bay Area beaches, with excellent hiking trails connecting to nearby preserves. Fishing from the rocky areas and exploring the diverse marine life in low tide pools are the primary draws, along with the golden hour views of the rugged Sonoma Coast landscape.

We were here on the late October, it was very quiet and peaceful. Not many cars were in the parking lot. Easy walk to get to the beach and the view was amazing and beautiful. I believe it will be very busy in the summer time. But the water was pretty cold. You need a wetsuit to get in the water. Few fishermen were there to fish, but not sure the catch.
The fog hangs low over the coast, a gray blanket that dampens the sound of the world but cannot stifle the roar of the sea. Below the high, crumbling cliffs, the Pacific heaves against the land with a slow and heavy violence. It is a dark water, cold and bruised, gathering itself in long lines that march in from the open horizon to break their backs upon the sand. The beach is narrow and scoured clean, a strip of earth caught between the sheer brown walls of rock and the white torment of the surf. There is no softness here, no welcoming arm of the coast. The wind carries the sharp, biting smell of kelp and salt, stinging the eyes and settling deep in the lungs. It is a place of ancient, grinding labor, where the ocean eats at the continent grain by grain, indifferent to the passing of years or the presence of men. To stand on this edge is to feel the weight of a solitude that has existed since the earth was youngโa raw, honest emptiness that demands nothing and promises nothing, save for the endless rising and falling of the tide.
This beach is not like Big Sur but still gives you the opportunity to feel like that. The place where ocean meets the sierra. The water was freezing in November.
Beautiful beach with rocky hills.
This was a fun, random stop to stretch our legs while driving down Hwy 1. We saw some cool caves and there was a lot of ocean life in the little puddles on the bluffs. A fun place to explore and move around before getting back on the road.
