About Shipman Beach / Haena Beach
This black sand beach on Hawaii's Big Island offers some of the island's most consistent and powerful waves, drawing experienced surfers and bodyboarders year-round. The dramatic volcanic landscape, with dark sand contrasting against turquoise water and nearby lava formations, creates a raw, rugged beauty distinct from typical Hawaiian beach aesthetics. The strong currents and shore break make it primarily a water sport destination rather than a swimming beach, and the local surf community maintains a respectful, no-frills vibe that keeps it relatively uncrowded.

A must hike. It's 2.9 miles one way but really easy. Almost flat with slight rises and drops some mudd and rocks. It's covered woth foliage 90 percent of the way so you hike in the shade. The beach frequently has turtles and a nice protected cove to snorkel in.
Awesome hike to a beautiful beach. Lots of turtles. We went after a few days of rain and it was muddy in some places but you can make it around.
It's an easy hike in, but plan for 1.5-2 hours to get there. The trail can get very muddy but there is usually ample room around the mud puddles to do a little off trail avoidance. The beach is truly amazing. The water is crystal clear, with cold springs in some places giving the water a fun mix of warm and cool. Turtles galore, just keep your distance but you are bound to see a dozen or so. Lots of shade also.
So this is def worth a reviewβ¦ this place is magical. I hiked by myself and felt like I was carried away on a magical journey. Donβt go when itβs raining. I went after 2 days no rain. Itβs a simple trail to follow, that leads out to a magical white sand beach covered in sea turtles. Itβs worth the trip. Not a hard hike. Do it. Bring a lunch and sit by the beach and eat . 5 stars, highlight of my trip
This is an amazing paradise beach. Now, to get there, you have to walk around 2 mile trail hiking. The view is beautiful a long the way, and the path can be muddy depending on the weather. Perfect for snorkeling and swimming, very safe, now there are some few very important things I want to mention: Please be respectful with the flora and the creatures around the area. Second, don't leave trash ( plastics, glass and other type of trash on the trail, beach or water, let work together for a better nature!!
